“Everything Everywhere All at Once” dominates at the 2023 Oscars ceremony
- "Everything Everywhere All at Once" became the big winner of the 95th Academy Awards, taking home awards for Best Picture, Director, Leading Actress, Supporting Actress, Supporting Actor, Editing, and Original Screenplay, totaling seven out of the 11 awards it was nominated for.
“Everything Everywhere All at Once”, the film that many considered a strong contender for the coveted award in the main category of the competition, did not disappoint, fulfilling the prediction of the Times critic Glenn Whipp.
The award for Best Actor went to Brendan Fraser for his work in “The Whale,” while the Best Actress award went to Michelle Yeoh for “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” Cate Blanchett (“Tár”), who was one of the favorites, missed out, as did Ana de Armas (“Blonde”), Andrea Riseborough (“To Leslie”), and Michelle Williams (“The Fabelmans”).
In the Best Director category, the award went to Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert for their work on “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” surpassing Martin McDonagh (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), Ruben Ostlund (“Triangle of Sadness”), and the acclaimed Steven Spielberg (“The Fabelmans”).
The Supporting Actor award went to Ke Huy Quan for his work in “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” beating Brendan Gleeson (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), Brian Tyree Henry (“Causeway”), Judd Hirsch (“The Fabelmans”), and Barry Keoghan (“The Banshees of Inisherin”).
Meanwhile, the Supporting Actress award went surprisingly but very warmly to Jamie Lee Curtis for her role in “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” which was also celebrated by her co-star Stephanie Hsu. The favorite in this category was Angela Bassett for her role in Marvel’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” but it was the veteran Lee Curtis who ended up taking home the golden statue.
And in the International Film category, one of our own films, “Argentina, 1985” (Argentina), entered the fight, but was surpassed by the favorite “All Quiet on the Western Front” (Germany).
Mexican Guillermo del Toro won the Animated Film award for his work on “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” securing his third personal Oscar of his career.
Singer Rihanna gave a heartfelt performance of the song “Lift Me Up” from the soundtrack of “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” on the Dolby stage. Meanwhile, Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava brought Bollywood energy to the stage with “Naatu Naatu” by Chandrabose and MM Keeravaani from the film “RRR.”
David Byrne, Son Lux, and Stephanie Hsu gave voice to “This Is a Life,” the theme song from the film “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” while young singer Sofia Carson and Diane Warren joined voices to sing “Applause,” the theme song from the film “Tell It Like A Woman.”
It had been announced that nominee Lady Gaga would not perform during the show, but the Oscar winner did perform her song “Hold My Hand” from the film “Top Gun: Maverick” on the Dolby Theater stage, dressed completely informally. The actress and singer has been filming her new movie “Joker,” but appeared in Los Angeles to sing the song that was born in her garage recording studio. In the background, a photograph of the late Tony Scott and actor Tom Cruise could be seen.
Finally, Grammy-winning singer Lenny Kravitz offered an emotional piano performance in the “In Memoriam” segment as a tribute to the figures linked to the world of cinema who are no longer with us, such as Olivia Newton-John, Albert Brenner, Irene Papas, Ian Whit, Ian Whitaker, Ray Liotta, Kirstie Allen, Amanda Mackey, Mary Alice, Douglas Kirkland, James Caan, Gina Lollobrigida y Rashel Welch, entre otros.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences stated that the winners in all categories would be announced live during the show, and that’s exactly what happened. In the previous edition, some categories were recorded in a pre-show, which was heavily criticized by members of the academy and the audience in general.
Presenters for awards and segments included Halle Berry, Paul Dano, Cara Delevingne, Harrison Ford, Kate Hudson, Mindy Kaling, Eva Longoria, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Andie MacDowell, Elizabeth Olsen, Pedro Pascal, and John Travolta, as well as Riz Ahmed, Halle Bailey, Antonio Banderas, Elizabeth Banks, Emily Blunt, Jessica Chastain, John Cho, Glenn Close, Jennifer Connelly, Ariana DeBose, Andrew Garfield, Hugh Grant, Danai Gurira, Salma Hayek Pinault, Samuel L. Jackson, Dwayne Johnson, Michael B. Jordan, Nicole Kidman, Troy Kotsur, Jonathan Majors, Melissa McCarthy, Janelle Monáe, Deepika Padukone, Florence Pugh, Questlove, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, and Donnie Yen.
