There are superyachts designed to demonstrate financial power, and then there are those capable of demonstrating something far more difficult: that ultra luxury can become a laboratory powerful enough to move an entire industry forward. Breakthrough, built by Feadship and delivered in 2025, belongs firmly to the latter category. At 118.8 metres in length with a 19-metre beam, she is the largest motor yacht ever built in the Netherlands and the world’s first superyacht to integrate hydrogen fuel-cell technology at this scale. The project began with an unusually ambitious question from her owner: how far could cleaner technology be pushed without compromising any of the expectations associated with contemporary large-yacht luxury? The answer required five years of development and forced the project team to solve engineering and regulatory challenges for which no complete framework yet existed.

Breakthrough’s technological core is deliberately hidden beneath the architecture of ultra luxury. Sixteen PowerCell fuel-cell systems generate up to 3 MW of electricity from cryogenically stored liquid hydrogen at approximately -253°C, producing water vapour when operating on hydrogen. The system is capable of supporting roughly a week of silent hotel-load operation at anchor or propelling the yacht at around 10 knots in suitable operating conditions. For longer passages, the hybrid architecture is supported by generators capable of running on second-generation HVO. That distinction matters. Breakthrough does not pretend to have solved maritime decarbonisation in its entirety; instead, it proves that technologies considered almost incompatible with a yacht of nearly 120 metres can already function at sea. Feadship, Lloyd’s Register, PowerCell and the wider project team also developed new classification and safety protocols, knowledge that was subsequently made available to help accelerate adoption beyond a single yacht.

What makes Breakthrough even more compelling is that none of this engineering turns her into an experimental vessel masquerading as luxury. RWD designed both exterior and interior around a deliberately calm visual language, combining more than one hundred shades of white and off-white with travertine, rattan, fumed eucalyptus and limed oak. Fourteen automated balconies extend from the hull, seven large platforms unfold towards the sea and, below the waterline, a submerged observation lounge allows guests to experience the marine environment through six immense double-layered windows. An 8.2-metre infinity pool, cinema, library, spa, hammam, sauna, gym, hospital facility and a multi-level private owner’s apartment complete a vessel whose technology is never presented as the opposite of luxury. It is used to expand the very definition of luxury.

The industry has already recognised that achievement. In 2026, Breakthrough received the Eco and Innovation Award at the BOAT Design & Innovation Awards and was again honoured at the World Superyacht Awards for her application of cryogenic hydrogen fuel-cell technology. Yet her relevance extends beyond trophies: technologies, safety frameworks and engineering principles originating with the project are already influencing other maritime vessels. This is where Breakthrough becomes genuinely exceptional. An ultra-luxury object may be admirable because of its rarity; an extraordinary one can use the resources of a single owner to finance knowledge capable of benefiting an entire industry.

Breakthrough deserves her place in the LUXONOMY Atlas of Excellence — 30th Anniversary Edition 2027 because she represents a new definition of power within luxury: not merely owning what almost nobody else can access, but possessing the resources and ambition to make possible something that did not previously exist. Over the coming decades, excellence will no longer be measured only by metres, price, materials or exclusivity. It will increasingly be judged by the ability of exceptional creations to push the technological, cultural and environmental boundaries of their industries. Breakthrough does exactly that.
