The luxury market is defined by unique values and consumer behaviors that distinguish it from mass consumption. In luxury, the product transcends functionality: what matters is what it symbolizes and how it makes the customer feel. Luxury consumers seek to differentiate, to stand out, and to project status; for them, a luxury item satisfies identity needs and provides “the emotion of feeling special” . In this segment, the focus is not on price but on value: customers are willing to pay up to 10 times more for a product that serves the same function because they perceive superior value in prestige and distinction. In other words, luxury is status; it represents how we feel and how we present ourselves to others.

In its 12th edition, the LUXONOMY™ Congress returns as a premier event exploring the nexus of luxury and longevity. Slated for March 4, 2026 at the iconic The Palace (a Luxury Collection Hotel) in Madrid, this one-day congress carries the theme “From the Gold Standard to the Age Standard,” underscoring a shift from traditional wealth metrics to the value of age, health, and innovation in defining luxury. The focus is on how the luxury industry is evolving in response to an aging population and breakthroughs in health and biotech – highlighting that “luxury is no longer driven by gold – the new standard is longevity”. This formal gathering will convene industry leaders and visionaries to share insights, foster collaborations, and set the agenda for the future of high-end products and services in an age-conscious world.
The LUXONOMY™ 12th Congress is an exclusive, high-level gathering – attendance is limited to 150 participants in order to ensure an intimate forum for dialogue.

The concept of conspicuous consumption was developed in the late 19th century by the American economist and sociologist Thorstein Veblen in his book The Theory of the Leisure Class (1899). Veblen argued that certain individuals acquire luxury goods and services not out of necessity, but as a way to show their social status and wealth.
