The history of TAG Heuer begins in 1860 when Edouard Heuer, a young Swiss watchmaker, founded his watchmaking workshop in St-Imier, a small town in the Swiss Jura. At just 20 years old, Heuer already showed great talent for watchmaking, and in 1869, he patented his first major innovation: a keyless winding system for pocket watches. This invention allowed users to wind and set the time on their watches without needing a separate key, a novelty at the time.
The Chronograph Revolution
In 1887, Heuer introduced another innovation that revolutionized the industry: the oscillating pinion. This component, which remains a key element in many modern chronographs, allowed for more efficient and precise construction of chronographs, making them easier to use and improving their reliability. Thanks to this innovation, Heuer positioned itself as a leader in the production of chronographs, watches capable of measuring specific time intervals, which became essential for sports and aviation.
Legacy in the Automotive Industry
In the following decades, the Heuer brand became closely associated with the world of sports, particularly motor racing. In 1911, the company launched the “Time of Trip,” the first dashboard chronograph designed specifically for cars and airplanes, an essential tool for pilots and drivers of the time.
Heuer’s relationship with motorsports continued to grow, and in 1962, the brand reached a new milestone when its “Autavia” chronograph was used by John Glenn during his orbital flight aboard the “Friendship 7” spacecraft. This achievement not only reaffirmed the precision of Heuer watches but also linked the brand to space exploration.

In 1985, the Heuer brand was acquired by the TAG group (Techniques d’Avant Garde), a conglomerate known for its involvement in Formula 1. The merger of these two companies gave birth to the TAG Heuer brand, which combined Heuer’s watchmaking heritage with TAG’s cutting-edge technology. This union resulted in the global expansion of the brand and the development of new watches that combined style, innovation, and functionality.
One of the most iconic models launched during this period was the TAG Heuer “Formula 1,” a sports watch that reflected the brand’s passion for motor racing. This model, released in 1986, quickly became a symbol of the brand and a commercial success.
Continued Innovation in the 21st Century
TAG Heuer has continued to innovate in the 21st century, adapting to technological changes while maintaining its reputation as one of the leading watch brands in the world. In 2015, the brand launched the TAG Heuer Connected, its first smartwatch, which combined the elegance of a traditional Swiss watch with the functionality of a smartwatch.
Over the years, TAG Heuer has collaborated with various personalities and events, from Formula 1 legends like Ayrton Senna to Hollywood stars like Leonardo DiCaprio. These collaborations have strengthened the brand’s image as a symbol of luxury, performance, and precision.
