THE WORLD’S BEST — #007 | PATEK PHILIPPE GRANDMASTER CHIME REF. 6300A-010

In the world of luxury, some objects derive their value from materials, others from scarcity, and a very small number from an almost impossible combination of knowledge, time, complexity and singularity. The Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime Ref. 6300A-010 belongs firmly to the latter category. Created specifically for Only Watch 2019, it was — and remains — the only Grandmaster Chime ever made in stainless steel, an extraordinarily unusual material choice for a Patek Philippe of such complexity. On 9 November 2019, it achieved CHF 31 million at Christie’s Geneva and, as of August 2026, continues to hold the world auction record for a watch. The paradox is remarkable: one of the most valuable watches ever created owes its status not to gold, platinum or an abundance of precious stones, but to something far more difficult to manufacture — an unrepeatable piece of horological engineering.
The Grandmaster Chime incorporates 20 complications within a reversible, double-faced case. Among them are five acoustic functions: grande sonnerie, petite sonnerie, minute repeater, an alarm capable of striking a programmed time and a date repeater that sounds the calendar date on demand. The latter two were developed as patented innovations. At its heart is the manually wound calibre 300 GS AL 36-750 QIS FUS IRM, accompanied by an instantaneous perpetual calendar, four-digit year display, second time zone, moon phases, power-reserve indications and multiple mechanical indicators. Its patented reversible case architecture allows the owner to alternate between the rose-gold time dial and the black calendar dial.
Yet to describe this watch merely as a technical achievement would be to misunderstand haute horlogerie. Its hand-guilloché centre, applied Breguet numerals, complex case architecture, finishing and the inscription “The Only One” turn every detail into an assertion of uniqueness. This is where one of the defining principles of contemporary ultra luxury becomes visible: once excellence reaches a certain level, value ceases to depend primarily on the cost of raw materials and begins to depend on the impossibility of reproducing the precise combination of history, savoir-faire, innovation and provenance embodied by an object. The steel itself is inexpensive compared with the watch it contains. The difference is knowledge.
This is why the Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime Ref. 6300A-010 deserves its place in the LUXONOMY Atlas of Excellence — 30th Anniversary Edition 2027. It represents a radical form of exclusivity: not the ability to manufacture something extremely expensive, but the ability to create something that has no reason to exist twice. As luxury moves towards extreme personalisation, exceptional craftsmanship, provenance and objects with unmistakable identity, this watch anticipated a direction that will become increasingly important. The future of ultra luxury will not necessarily lie in producing more extraordinary objects. It will lie in ensuring that some become absolutely irreplaceable.
