THE WORLD’S BEST — #001 | CHEVAL BLANC PARIS

Cheval Blanc Paris: one of the world’s most extraordinary expressions of contemporary luxury

In the heart of Paris, facing the Seine and just moments from the Louvre, there is a place that perhaps explains better than almost any other where true ultra-luxury is heading. Cheval Blanc Paris is not simply one of the French capital’s great hotels. It is a contemporary interpretation of what hospitality can become when architecture, art, gastronomy, privacy, beauty and service are conceived as one seamless experience. Housed within the historic La Samaritaine building and belonging to LVMH, Cheval Blanc occupies an extraordinary position from which Paris itself seems to become part of the property: the Seine, Notre-Dame, the city’s rooftops and some of its greatest monuments appear beyond vast windows like living works of art.

Its first defining characteristic is precisely what it chose not to become. While traditional grand hotels have often been built around hundreds of rooms, Cheval Blanc Paris chose rarity. There are only 72 rooms and suites, creating an atmosphere closer to an exceptional private Parisian residence than to a conventional luxury hotel. Architect and designer Peter Marino conceived interiors where French craftsmanship, contemporary art, bespoke pieces, stone, wood, exquisite fabrics and an extraordinary use of natural light create an elegance that seems almost independent of time. It does not attempt to recreate historic Paris, nor does it need to display wealth conspicuously. Its luxury lies in the sophistication of what initially appears effortless: proportions, materials, silence, light and the knowledge that almost everything has been considered specifically for its place.

Architecture alone, however, does not make one of the world’s finest hotels. Cheval Blanc Paris becomes truly exceptional in the way it makes service almost disappear. Its team of Majordomes, available 24 hours a day, embodies a philosophy built around knowing, remembering and anticipating. The objective is not for guests to constantly notice that they are being served. Quite the opposite: things should simply happen before they need to be requested. Removing friction, waiting and unnecessary procedures may ultimately be one of the purest definitions of contemporary luxury.

Gastronomy forms another universe within the Maison. At Plénitude, chef Arnaud Donckele has created a dining experience awarded three Michelin stars, taking French cuisine into an almost artistic dimension and placing extraordinary emphasis on the complexity and emotion of sauces. Around it, the Maison’s different restaurants allow guests to move from haute cuisine towards more relaxed experiences without abandoning excellence. The same philosophy continues at Dior Spa Cheval Blanc, where the relationship between beauty, French savoir-faire and luxury acquires an entirely new dimension. Its treatment suites and spectacular 30-metre indoor swimming pool create a sanctuary so serene that it becomes difficult to remember that one of the world’s most intense cities continues immediately outside.

Perhaps The Apartment, however, best reveals the scale of Cheval Blanc’s ambition. Approximately 1,000 sqm across two floors, seven bedrooms, a private swimming pool, hammam, sauna, fitness room, treatment room, private cinema, private lift and terraces opening onto Paris. Calling it a suite almost feels inadequate. It is effectively a private residence suspended above the city, created for guests who are no longer simply looking for somewhere exceptional to stay in Paris, but for the possibility of possessing their own private world within Paris.

And this is precisely why LUXONOMY selects Cheval Blanc Paris among THE WORLD’S BEST. It brings together many of the codes defining the next era of ultra-luxury: rarity, privacy, hyper-personalisation, craftsmanship, wellbeing, extraordinary gastronomy, culture, design and an obsessive attention to detail. It does not need grandeur to prove its status. Its greatest sophistication lies in everything that is not immediately visible.

Cheval Blanc Paris is not simply an exceptional place to sleep. It is one of the finest demonstrations in the world today of what luxury should feel like.
