Hermès Expands Its Global Footprint With a New Artisan Workshop in Japan

Managing Director at LUXONOMY™ Group Middle East
Hermès has announced the creation of a new leather goods atelier in Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan, scheduled to open in 2026. It will become the maison’s first major craftsmanship hub outside France dedicated to high-end leather production.
The project is part of Hermès’ long-term strategy to strengthen manufacturing capacity for icons such as the Birkin and the Kelly, whose global demand continues to exceed availability. The new facility will train Japanese artisans in the maison’s rigorous craftsmanship methods and incorporate the sustainability standards Hermès applies across its French workshops.
This move also carries strategic weight: Hermès is consolidating its presence in Asia not only through retail but by expanding its highly controlled production ecosystem. At a moment when luxury houses seek to secure their supply chains and protect exclusivity, Hermès once again stands out for its commitment to integration, precision, and long-term vision.
